FLUENT ZAMBIA
Fluent Zambia is a Zambian non-profit NGO that works to preserve indigenous Zambian languages and to promote the use of local languages in early childhood education.
We create local language content in the form of language introductions and tutorials for non-natives and for non-speaking natives who wish to reconnect with their mother tongue. This is done largely through online initiatives, because we recognize the wider outreach this gives us, and because global reading and learning trends have gone digital.
We advocate the sustained use of local languages beyond the bounds of the family circle, to more communal and institutional levels, with the hope that such frequent and sustained use will contribute to the preservation of local languages.
On the long term, we are collecting literature in the seven biggest local languages of Zambia to create databases which will be used for research and language documentation purposes.
Fluent Zambia is supported by donations from various stakeholders and by dedicated volunteers who share valuable skills like linguistics, communication, education, and Information Technology.
Our Mission
Our mission is to progressively address the insufficient documentation of indigenous Zambian languages and the low amount of local language literature available to native speakers so that no Zambian language present today should go into extinction.
Our Vision
We foresee a time when every local language is protected and assured of continuity. We also foresee a time when children living within their native community can attain good education in their native language.
What We Are Doing
- We have started an English-Local Language Bilingual Dictionary project with one of the seven biggest local languages.
- In addition to that, we are collecting and compiling local language literature to create a digital archive of Zambian languages. The text collected will be used for academic, research, language documentation and language development purposes.
- We are also conducting children’s local language literacy initiatives. (See our Projects page for our current children’s initiative)
